Texas A&M International University's Killam Library plaza will be the site of a special sendoff ceremony Sunday at 4:30 p.m. for members of The 3rd Battalion 141st Infantry of the Texas Army National Guard who are deploying to Afghanistan.

Of the 55 soldiers deploying, most reside in Laredo and Hebbronville. Some 12 are TAMIU students who will suspend their studies to serve.

First Lieutenant Alfredo Cavazos, who is helping to coordinate the event, said it serves as an opportunity for the community to show its support.

"The intent of this ceremony is to provide an opportunity for the soldier's extended families, friend, and community to show support for the soldiers as they face a historic mission and great challenges in the months ahead," Lt. Cavazos said.

The event is scheduled from 4:30-6:00 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend.
