Texas A&M International University's co-ed fraternity Alpha Psi Lambda will proudly present its second annual benefit production of Eve Ensler's award-winning play "The Vagina Monologues" Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6 in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The shows will be held in English Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. and in Spanish Sunday, March 6 at 4 p.m.

Rolando Ramos, event coordinator, said the show is presented as part of the V-Day 2005 College Campaign, a global movement designed to raise money and awareness for organizations that work to stop violence (including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation, and sexual slavery) against women and girls.

Ramos emphasized that contrary to the belief that the show is a lesbian movement against men, it exists to stop violence against women.

"In light of what has been occurring in Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, V-Day is an opportunity for the University and Laredo community to become involved in what is being called a social movement that will ultimately end violence against women," Ramos stated.

Tickets for the performance cost $10 per person. The theme of this year's collective V-Day efforts is the "Women of Iraq, Under Siege." Ten percent of proceeds from this event will be used to help effect real change in the violent conditions for women and girls in that country, and the rest of the proceeds will go to Laredo's Sexual Assault Services and Information.

Alpha Psi Lambda's mission statement summarizes the focus of this event--to promote continued personal and collective growth, success, and unity through education, leadership, cultural awareness and community service.
