When Joy Simpson, counselor in Texas A&M International University' s Student Counseling Services (SCS), received her license as a professional counselor in the state of Texas, she elevated her office to a unique level of competence.

Dr. Terence P. Hannigan, director, explained Simpson's accomplishment means all full-time clinicians are now licensed. Adriana Blasco, also a counselor, was licensed in 2003.

"This means we offer a high level of competency, recognized by the State of Texas, to our students. We have a very dedicated and professional staff who enjoy the work and can really make a difference to someone experiencing difficulty," Hannigan said.

Dr. Hannigan said the Office can provide individual, couple, family and group counseling to students, with sessions generally running about 45 minutes.

"Going to college is a very stressful time for most people. You're growing mentally and physically; your life is very different than when you were in high school. While this is exciting, sometimes you might just need someone to talk with, or help you make good choices," explained Hannigan.

He also stressed that college students of all ages are welcome and can benefit from the University services.

Services are provided free of charge to students and are supported by the student activity fees paid each semester. Some testing may require a small fee.
