Texas A&M International University senior Maria Evelia Guerrero-Parker will perform her flute degree recital on Thursday, March 31 at 6 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

Guerrero-Parker said earning her Bachelors degree in music in her hometown was a thrill.

"I had to move back to Laredo from Houston, because of family, but to my pleasant surprise it was great coming back when TAMIU had just been accredited for music degrees. It is a great privilege to have Dr. Susan Berdahl as my teacher as she is a Fulbright Scholar. I have learned a great deal from her and from being in this studio," said Guerrero-Parker.

She said she has been honored to study with and about many great flutists in Laredo.

"When I was in high school I learned of flutists such as Beatriz Perez, four-time All-State, Ana Pomar, All-State piccolo, Cristina Cabello and too many others too numerous to name.  I looked up to these flutists as well as to the current virtuosos in Laredo such as Jacinto Davila, San Juanita Rodriguez, Melissa Hinojosa and Rosario De Leon. Then there are also the younger virtuosos I look up to such as Monica Arriaga, Israel Joseph, Eileen Torrales, who will perform a quartet with me at the recital, Rodrigo Corral and Xanath Placensia, all at TAMIU now," said Guerrero-Parker.

She said her repertoire includes music that she's learned in the past and also while at TAMIU, including works by Debussy, Bach and some more unusual work.

"I will also do Claude Bolling's "Versatile" from the Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio where everyone will get to enjoy the sound of a bass flute. My accompanist will be Dr. Fritz Gechter and on the Bolling we will be adding an electric bass by Julio Cano and drum set by Alejo Ortiz. I

hope people will come and enjoy the music," said Guerrero-Parker.
