Official enrollment for the Spring Semester 2005 at Texas A&M international University is 4,202, a 3% increase over Spring 2004 enrollment of 4,080.

Semester credit hours (SCH), upon which State funding is based, are up to 41,614, or 6.8% over last Spring's SCH of 38,954.

Dr. Ray Keck, TAMIU president, said that while the increase in enrollment is positive, reductions in state student support for Texas Grant and other student assistance programs have impacted enrollment.

"Last year at this time 78% of our students were receiving financial assistance through efforts such as Texas Grant and other programs. This year, with State budget cuts and reduction in support for these programs, only 68% of students are receiving aid, a 10% reduction and clearly, a reduction in our student enrollment. While this is disturbing, we are heartened by the efforts of our state legislative team to address these shortages in student support," Dr. Keck said.

Keck noted that while mandates like "Closing the Gaps" aim at getting more students enrolled and graduating from college, this will not be possible without State support of assistance programs.

"We simply cannot close the gaps at this point. Texas is in danger of losing its competitive edge in the global market if it does not address the shortage in funding. Participation in higher education is directly proportional to the investment we make in helping students to access higher education," he explained.

He provided additional information on the TAMIU Spring Semester 2005 class:

Undergraduate students number 3,219 or 76.5% of total enrollment population while graduate students are 23.5% of the student population. Of graduate students enrolled, 519 hold TAMIU undergraduate degrees.

Full-time students comprise 52% of the Spring enrollment while 48% are part-time.

Female students outnumber males 64% to 36% and 91 percent of students identify themselves as minority, including Hispanic, African-American, American Indian, Asian and Other. Fifteen U.S. states are included in the Spring enrollment, while 24 countries are represented in the student population. International enrollment is at 225 students. The student traveling the furthest to TAMIU is from Nepal.
