Anyone aiming to become a better driver can take advantage of a defensive driving course being offered by Texas A&M International University's Office of Special Programs Saturday, April 23.

The 6-hour course is approved and recognized by the Texas Department of Insurance and includes a certificate valid for insurance reduction or ticket dismissal. Course will be held at 9 a.m.

Jessica Villarreal, program coordinator, said the course cost is $35 per participant and University employees pay $25. She said enrollment is limited, so anyone interested in participating in the course is encouraged to register as early as possible.

Villarreal said defensive driving courses were a good idea, because completing the course helps reduce the risk of driving by proactively steering clear of dangerous situations.

"In addition to mastering the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving, defensive driving is a more advanced form of training drivers can take," Villarreal said. "Driving defensively means not only taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, but also keeping an eye on the other driver."

To register for this course or for more information, please visit the Office of Special Programs in the Student Center, room 118 or contact Villarreal at 326.2700.

University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday.
