Spring's incandescent colors and joyful accordion notes will fill the stage for  Texas A&M International University's "Una Primavera Mexicana" highlighting dances dating back to the Mexican Revolution Wednesday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Featuring TAMIU's Ballet Folklórico, "Una Primavera Mexicana" will showcase a lively series of folklórico dances from the Mexican states Veracruz, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, Chiapas, Guerrero, and Zacatecas.

Admission to this event is free and open to the public.

"Una Primavera Mexicana" will feature performances by six folklórico community groups including Bonnie L. GarcÌa Ballet Folklórico, Gabriela Mendoza García's Ballet Folklórico Infantil, Antonio Gonzalez Middle School Ballet Folklórico, Honore Ligarde Elementary Ballet Folklórico, United High School Ballet Folklórico, and TAMIU Ballet Folklórico Juvenil.

In addition, the University's Mariachi Internacional under the direction of Robert Lopez will accompany the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico as they perform dances from Jalisco.

Gabriela Mendoza-García, concert organizer and Ballet Folklórico director, said that the concert, fully adorned in the colors and sounds of Mexico, serves to remind and educate the community about the centuries-old traditions, customs, and culture of Laredo's neighboring country.

"It is important to keep folk traditions alive through multicultural activities like this concert in order to become aware of our own culture," Mendoza-García declared.

Mendoza-García said "Una Primavera Mexicana" includes authentic renditions of traditional steps and incorporates choreography from various master teachers at national and international conferences.

The traditional China Poblana outfit worn by women and the Chinaco outfit worn by men will mark the premier dances of Puebla.

The Dr. Francisco Mendoza Folklórico Leadership Scholarship will also be presented for the first time to a TAMIU Ballet Folklórico student based on outstanding leadership, service, and commitment to the art of folklórico dance.

Founded in 1996 by Mendoza-García, TAMIU's Ballet Folklórico is the first performing arts group to the University. It is well versed in dances from all regions of Mexico and has included students from Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Zambia, Mexico, El Salvador, and the United States.
