Texas A&M International University's commitment to educational success continues through its naming of Gina de la Miyar González as director of the Office of Recruitment and School Relations.

González, previously associate director for the Office of Admissions, will oversee the responsibility of making the community aware of the educational opportunities that exist at TAMIU by providing information about the University to a large number of educational institutions in the South Texas region. She will also have a significant responsibility for the retention of students enrolling at TAMIU.

González emphasized the importance of making the community aware of educational opportunities in their hometown. To achieve this goal, she plans to visit students at elementary and secondary school campuses and offer those students and their parents field trips to the University to make them aware of the chances they have to advance themselves.

Her recruitment efforts will focus on South Texas and part of San Antonio. While the University has a strong focus on recruiting high school juniors and seniors, some of the recruitment focus will expand to include transfer students. In addition, González said she would like to expand recruitment efforts abroad.

"We want to explore recruitment in Mexico in cities like Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey," González maintained. "Furthermore, I would like us to enroll first-time freshmen from overseas."

Taking on the role of director is an exciting opportunity for González because she can tap into her experiences as a TAMIU student and long-time staff member.

"I'm excited because now I'm back to where I started. Everything I saw as a student-employee that we could do or change I can now actually address," González said.

González has been with TAMIU since 1996. She started as a student employee working for what was then the Office of Enrollment Management and School Relations (now the Office of Recruitment and School Relations). In 2000, she became associate director for the Office of Admissions where she assisted in the direction of the registration process.

Born in Mexico City, she graduated from United High School in 1995. She holds a BA (2000) with a concentration in Marketing and an MBA in International Trade (2002), both from TAMIU.

University Office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday.
