TAMIU Adds MS Biology

Texas A&M International University’s commitment to address the community’s needs continues with the addition of a Masters of Science in Biology to its degree programs.

The degree is a response to overwhelming support from students, teachers and employers after they expressed a need for the program, said Dr. Daniel Mott, associate dean, professor and chair for the department of biology and chemistry.

“We surveyed our current students, all the teachers in the local districts and employers in the area and established a Web site link to the department so that others from outside our area could respond. The results were very positive, so we proceeded,” explained Dr. Mott.

With the addition of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center (LBVSC), the University tripled its teaching lab space and now has research lab space for graduate students.

“Clearly we can improve the figures of graduate degrees in the immediate area of Laredo. It is our strong desire to also attract students from at least South Texas. Having a diverse program will strengthen it greatly. We already have faculty doing great things with our undergraduates, especially in research. The sooner a student gets involved in research, the more likely they are to continue with an advanced degree,” added Mott.

Three students are currently enrolled in the program, recently approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for Fall 2005, but plans are to increase the number to 10 – 15 students.

“Discussions with various government agencies also indicated a desire to have people with graduate degrees. There are good jobs in the sciences in Laredo and all of Texas. Now our students will be able to compete for these jobs,” said Mott.

Potential employers include various state and federal agencies.  Graduates can also teach up to the community college level.
