Anyone aiming to become a better driver can take advantage of a defensive driving course being offered by Texas A&M International University's Office of Special Programs Tuesday, June 21 and Thursday, June 23.

The 6-hour course is approved and recognized by the Texas Department of Insurance and includes a certificate valid for insurance reduction or ticket dismissal. Course will be held from 6 – 9 p.m. on both days.

Jessica Villarreal, program coordinator, said the course cost is $35 per participant. University employees pay $25. Enrollment is limited, so anyone interested in participating in the course is encouraged to register as early as possible.

Villarreal said defensive driving courses are a good idea, and completing the course helps students to drive more safely and effectively.

"In addition to mastering the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving, defensive driving is a more advanced form of training," Villarreal said, "Driving defensively means not only taking responsibility for yourself and your actions, but also keeping an eye on the other driver."

To register for this course or for more information, please visit the Office of Special Programs in the Student Center, room 118 or contact Villarreal at 326.2700.

University office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.
