New Building Brings Office Relocations to TAMIU

After eight weeks and a total of 173 moves, some Texas A&M International University staff, administrators and faculty have settled into their new offices and having new office neighbors.

“The moves on campus began April 1 and were completed by May 27,” explained Elizabeth N. Martinez, associate vice president for administration, “as a result of the opening of the new Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center (LBVSC).”

Faculty and administration from the College of Arts and Sciences moved into the new building and faculty offices and administrative offices were arranged to better serve the University.

“It’s a very positive thing. We are able to group all our colleges together. For example, we have all the College of Education located on the fourth floor of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library (KL). In the past, they occupied space on third floor of the Killam Library and had offices in the Student Center as well,” added Martinez.

As programs, positions and the University grew, office spaces were somewhat scattered, she noted. Administrative functions that had temporarily been moved out of the Killam Library are now back.

“Some administrative departments function better when they’re closer. It helps business flow,” said Martinez.

The office of human resources and the purchasing department are now located on the third floor of the Killam Library. The office of the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs moved from the second floor to the third floor of the Killam Library, while the offices of the associate vice president for Student Success moved from the Student Center to the Killam Library first floor.

Although the offices and departments for the College of Arts and Sciences were reassigned to three buildings, they are in close proximity. The offices for the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, department of biology and chemistry, and the department of social sciences are now in the LBVSC. The department of behavioral, applied sciences and criminal justice and the department of mathematical and physical sciences remain in Dr. F.M Canseco Hall (CH), and the department of language and literature relocated to Anthony J. and Georgia A. Pellegrino Hall (PH).

Next on the University’s schedule is changes to current buildings to accommodate additional office moves.

The science labs that were in Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall (CH) will be decommissioned this summer to make way for the Writing Center and Programs for Academic Support and Enrichment (PASE). This move is scheduled for early Fall.

Martinez said updated University locations and phone numbers are now available on the University’s Web site.

“We are in the process of updating the building directories and signage, but the online directory is current. Anyone who needs to find an office or a department can easily access the online directory,” Martinez said.
