Learn Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese or Spanish this Fall at Texas A&M International University. Registration is currently underway at TAMIU's International Language Institute (ILI). Classes are from Aug. 24 through Dec. 15.

TAMIU admission isn't required and all foreign language classes are for beginning students. All classes are taught by native speakers and designed for beginning students to bring both language and culture into the classroom.

Beginning Arabic 1, Beginning Mandarin Chinese 1 and Beginning Japanese 1 will meet evenings and are open to the public. Those who have already taken Japanese 1 or have some prior knowledge are encouraged to take Japanese 2. Most classes meet from 7:30 - 8:45 p.m.

Beginning Spanish 1 is designed for true beginners. Beginning Spanish 2 is designed for people who have already taken Beginning Spanish 1 or have some very basic knowledge of Spanish but are still at the beginning level. Spanish classes are available in the afternoon from 1 - 2:15 p.m. and in the evening from 6 - 7:15 p.m. or 7:30 - 8:45 p.m.

Informal conversations with the instructor are required before signing up for Beginning Spanish 2 and Beginning Japanese 2 to evaluate the students' skills.

The courses will focus on basic conversational and communication skills and cultural awareness and give students an introduction to the language and assist them in understanding and producing the language. All courses are taught in the communicative approach and students will use the language starting from the first class day.

All foreign language teachers are native speakers of the languages they teach. Mandarin will be taught by Kai Yang; Husam Omar will teach Arabic and Sugako Yoshimura Stone will teach Japanese. Lisa Flores will be the instructor for the afternoon Spanish classes.
