2005 - 2006 Sánchez Lecture Series Begins Tonight at 7 P.M.

The 2005 - 2006 A.R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series presented by Texas A&M International University's College of Arts and Sciences will begin Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. with "Not the Border but Laredo: How Cultural Creator Give Meaning to an American City." The lecture will also kick off "Laredo: 250 Years of History" a three-day border history conference sponsored by Laredo's 250th Celebration Commission, TAMIU and Humanities Texas.

Funded by the A.R. Sánchez Foundation, the three lectures in the series are free and open to the public and will take place on their respective evenings at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Dr. Henry C. Schmidt, associate professor of history at Texas A&M University and the Series' first lecturer, specializes in Latin American and Mexico national period history. His most recent paper explores Tejano and Mexicano cultural life along the lower Rio Grande in the 20th Century. He is currently working on a book on the cultural history of U.S.-Mexico relations for the University of Texas Press. Dr. Schmidt received his B.A. and M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a Ph.D. in Latin American History.

April 18, 2006 - Dr. Dean Hamer "The Gay and the God Gene"
