Texas A&M International University’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program has been notified by The Council on Social Work Education that the Commission on Accreditation has granted  the program accreditation through October 2009.

Provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Dr. Dan Jones said the accreditation is noteworthy.

“This achievement takes our Social Work program to a new and higher level, and positions it for even greater success in the years to come,” Dr. Jones said.

The accreditation came after a self-study review brief authored by TAMIU Social Work Program director Dr. Marian Aguilar and program instructors Eliza Davila and Denise Longoria.

Associate professor and chair of the department of behavioral, applied sciences and criminal justice, Dr. John Kilburn said the program was remarkable and deeply relevant to the University’s service area.

“This is a remarkable program that emphasizes an understanding of the border region, along with a knowledge of culture, values and history of the area in which the practitioner serves and clients live.  Program graduates are well-prepared to serve our region,” Dr. Kilburn explained.

TAMIU’s BSW prepares students as beginning level practitioners who are committed to practice that includes services to at-risk populations, especially those living along the border, and to promote the social economic justice
