The spirit of local philanthropy at Texas A&M International University will be saluted as part of National Philanthropy Week Thursday, Nov. 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the TAMIU Student Center Rotunda.

As part of the observation, the University will host a reception for its donors and unveil a Donor Wall that provides a powerful reminder  of the generosity that has benefited Laredo's University.

Candy Hein, TAMIU vice president for institutional advancement, said the national observance, now in its 20th year, offers all a chance to reflect on the meaning of giving and what giving accomplishes.

"We believe it's time to officially recognize the countless individuals and organizations that have given to TAMIU over the past 35 years," Hein explained.

She said the National Philanthropy Week local observance is especially relevant as it falls within TAMIU's 35th anniversary year.

"As we commemorate our 35th anniversary, we are privileged to celebrate the $50 million in remarkable support that the 85 individual members and corporations  of our Heritage Society have donated in gifts of $25,000 or more. These major gifts of $25,000 or more average $2 million per year in gifts to the University, its programs and its students.  We also benefit from the generosity of contributions to the Annual Fund Campaign, with participation by community members, alumni and TAMIU faculty and staff," she explained.

Hein noted that National Philanthropy Week salutes the power of generosity and said TAMIU and its service communities have been tremendously assisted by this generosity.

"Thanks to the generosity of so many, TAMIU is stronger than ever as we pursue the excellence expected of all higher education institutions. This support is a catalyst as we work daily to deliver our mission to improve the quality of life in all our service communities," she said.
