Take part in the ageless tale of Las Posadas Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Texas A&M International University Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.

This event is free and open to the public and presented by the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico. Families are encouraged to come and bring their children.

"Las Posadas is one of the oldest traditions at TAMIU that was begun by the members of the Student Government Association and the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico in 1997. The students wanted to preserve the traditional Mexican posada and celebrate it here on campus. This celebration began as a very simple event and has grown in the short nine years of its existence. It is fast becoming a well-loved tradition at TAMIU and the Laredo community," explained Gabriela Mendoza-García, director and founder of the Ballet Folklórico.

In the nine nights before Christmas, groups of families re-enact Mary and Joseph's search for lodging in Bethlehem. As they travel from house to house, carrying figures representing the pilgrims, those outside sing and request a place to rest. Inside, the residents respond in song, denying their request. Finally, the last house welcomes them. This is repeated nine times; the last takes place on Christmas Eve.

"As is the tradition, we will begin the evening with the Posada. All guests are invited to stroll through the TAMIU campus as we pay homage to this Christmas celebration," said Mendoza-García.

Guests will also be treated to entertainment that includes dances from across México in Mexican history, including the premiere of dances from the porfiorato era in Mexican history. Performers include the TAMIU  Ballet Folklórico, TAMIU Ballet Folklórico Juvenil, Honore Ligarde Elementary  Ballet Folklórico, Gabriela M. Garcia‚s Ballet Folklórico Infantil, United  High School Ballet Folklórico, and Gonzalez Middle School Ballet Folklórico.
