If you plan to travel abroad or if you want to retain your mental sharpness, sign up for a foreign language class offered by the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) International Language Institute (ILI). Registration runs from Monday, Dec. 5 through Jan. 13 at Pellegrino Hall, room 302.

University admission is not required and those who complete the courses will receive continuing education credits.

Tuition is $368 per course.

"In our global society, foreign languages and cross-cultural communication are becoming more and more important. Being fluent in English and in one, two or more foreign languages is the way to go and be ready for the future," explained Lola Orellano Norris, ILI program director.

Foreign languages offered in the Spring are Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Arabic.

"The classes are for beginners with little or no prior knowledge in the foreign languages," added Norris.

Classes are scheduled to meet twice a week depending on the language - Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday at 6 or 7:30 p.m., January to May.

Beginner and Intermediate Spanish classes are also offered at noon.

Students learn basic language communications skills and gain insights into the culture of the respective countries. Classes employ an interactive methodology, where students apply their learned language skills immediately in the classroom setting.

"The classes are suited for those who would like to broaden their horizons and learn a new language. It is also suited for people who travel, either for business or pleasure, and want to be able to communicate and learn about the culture," said Norris.

For more information, please contact Norris at 326.2136, e-mail ili@tamiu.edu or visit offices in the Anthony J. and Georgia A. Pellegrino Hall, room 302.
