TAMU’s Regent Jones TAMIU Fall Commencement Speaker

Fall Commencement Exercises at Texas A&M International University will be held outdoors Saturday, December 17 at 10 a.m. on the interior campus green in front of Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Bill Jones (photo), vice chairman of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, will serve as commencement speaker for the over 450 undergraduate and graduate candidates for degrees.

Jones, of Austin, received his undergraduate degree in business management from Texas A&M University.  While at Texas A&M, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets.  He received the Outstanding Freshman in the Corps of Cadets award, was a member of the prestigious Ross Volunteers Honor Guard and achieved the rank of First Brigade Commander. 

Jones earned his juris doctor from Baylor University School of Law where he was a member of the National Order of Barristers, a Moot Court Champion and a member of the National Mock Trial Team. After graduation, he joined the law firm of Liddell, Sapp, Zivley, Hill & LaBoon, L.L.P.  In 1991, he and partners, Michael P. Cash and David Springhetti, formed Cash Jones & Springhetti, L.L.P. in Houston, Texas. 

In 2000, he moved to Austin to serve as the General Counsel to the Office of the Governor for Governor Rick Perry.  Presently, he has gone full circle and is again associated with Locke Liddell & Sapp LLP in Austin.

He has long been active with bar and community activities including serving as the 1996-97 President of the 20,000-member Texas Young Lawyers Association.  As Texas Young Lawyers Association President, he  also served on the State Bar of Texas Executive Committee and the State Bar Board of Directors.  He is serving, or has served, as a member of several other boards including the Baylor Law School Alumni Association Executive Board.

 Jones was named the Baylor Young Lawyer of the Year in 1997 by the Baylor University School of Law.  He serves on the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Foundation Board, the Capitol Area Boy Scouts of America Board, the Legacy Society Executive Board, the Texas Public Policy Foundation Board, and the Texas State History Museum Foundation Board and until recently, the Texas A&M Former Students Association Board.

Governor Perry appointed Jones to the Board of Regents in 2003. He was elected Vice Chairman of the Board in 2005.  He serves as a member on the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs and the Committee on Finance. 

He is also a member of the Presidential Library Committee and the Public Policy and Planning Committee.  In addition, he serves as the Board's liaison to the Texas A&M Research Foundation and the Texas Growth Fund Board. He is the System Athletic Liaison and a member of the Herman F. & Minnie Belle Heep Texas A&M University Foundation.  His term expires February 1, 2009.
