Non-native English speakers who seek to advance professionally or academically or just want to improve their English skills are encouraged to register for English as a Second Language (ESL)  classes offered by Texas A&M International University's International Language Institute (ILI). Registration starts Monday, Dec. 5 in Pellegrino Hall, room 302. Registration deadline is Jan. 13, 2006.

Late fees will be assessed after the deadline. Late registration runs through Jan. 20.

"We will offer one Beginning, two Intermediate and two Advanced levels of ESL classes," said Lola Orellano Norris, program director.

University admission is not required, but students will be required to take a placement test. The cost of the placement test is $25. Students will be placed in the corresponding level according to the test results.

Classes are open to anyone 18 or older.  Foreign students who require student visas need to visit the ILI offices as soon as possible.

Tuition varies.

"The ESL program is a comprehensive program. All classes teach listening, speaking, grammar, reading and writing skills. Classes are taught with the communicative approach using an interactive methodology. Students use the language actively from the first class day. Small classes encourage rapid language acquisition," explained Norris.

There are two types of programs - semi-intensive and intensive. The semi-intensive program meets four times a week in the evenings and is suited for professionals. Anyone who wants to improve his or her English rapidly in a total immersion setting is encouraged to sign up for the intensive program.

The semi-intensive program classes meet Monday through Thursday from 7:30 - 9:45 p.m. In addition to the classes, students practice their skills on special language-learning software in the computer lab. Professionals who want to reach an advanced level of English to be better prepared in the business world are encouraged to register for this program.

In the intensive program, each level is taught in eight weeks. Two intensive sessions will be taught per semester from January to March and from March to May. Classes meet daily, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

In addition to the daily classes, students must complete lab work in the computer labs, practicing their skills with interactive language learning programs customized to their level.

"After eight weeks, a new intensive program starts and students who have completed all the requirements can pass on to the next level," added Norris.

This program is suited for those interested in improving their English skills in preparation to entering the University.

Students who finish the last level of ESL (level 106) with a B or higher are exempt from taking the TOEFL when applying for admission at TAMIU.
