United Independent School District students who fancy pursuing a Communication career have an advantage not shared by most high school students:  they’ll now be able to have University credit granted to them.

Through an innovative articulation agreement signed Wednesday with Texas A&M International University, UISD students who satisfactorily complete specified UISD courses and programs can be granted TAMIU credit in the BA degree in Communication program at the University. (photo)

Some 30 UISD students intrigued by the field joined TAMIU and UISD administrators Wednesday in the University’s Student Center lobby to sign the agreement, which will become effective this Spring.

Dr. Dan Jones, TAMIU provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the collaborative venture is a win-win for UISD and TAMIU.

“We’re committed to increasing access and participation to higher education for Laredo students. Through this agreement, UISD students who complete designated high school courses in the graphic arts can earn University credit at the same time.  We will hold their credits in escrow at the University until they graduate from high school.  When they enroll at TAMIU, we will award them up to 6 credit hours.  It’s a great opportunity for students to get ahead, get immersed in University-level coursework and explore a career in communication,” Dr. Jones said.
