Art Classes at TAMIU Offer New Opportunities

This Spring at Texas A&M International University offers current or budding artists a chance to brush up on their arts skills or take on a new challenge.

The TAMIU Visual Arts Program is offering a variety of exciting studio opportunities this semester. These classes are available for non-degree seeking students from the seasoned artist to the novice.

Classes available are as follows:

ARTS-4334-201 Seminar: Special Topics in the Arts: Painting from the Figure, Mondays and Wednesdays from  10:00-12:30PM. Instructor: Janet Krueger. This class is an upper-division class for those who have an interest in figurative work. The class will paint from a model on Mondays, and develop their work on Wednesdays. Different media will be explored and there will be group discussions covering contemporary figurative artists and issues.

ARTS-2323-201 Life Drawing, Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-03:30PM. Instructor: Janet Krueger. This class focuses on classical academic rendering of the figure using charcoal, conte, pastel and India ink. Male and female models are available for each class meeting. Taking Life Drawing and Painting from the Figure will give the figurative artist a tremendous foundation for any figurative work.

ARTS-4361-201 Illustration/Electronic Imaging, Mondays and Wednesdays from  10:00-12:30PM. Instructor: Alma Haertlein.
This is a studio class more than a computer-based class, using traditional media such as watercolor, oils, pastels, pen and ink, and colored pencils. Students create illustration designs for selected topic ranging from book illustration, editorial images, labels and a variety of graphic illustration topics. There will be an introduction to computer software to further manipulate their work. Basic computer skills are necessary; some knowledge of image enhancement programs is helpful but not required.

ARTS-2333-202 Printmaking I, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-3:30PM. Instructor: Janet Krueger. An introduction to woodcut, intaglio, lithography/planographic techniques, linoleum block printing, and monotype. Students are encouraged to work with themes, images and designs of their own creation. First time art students with no drawing experience find printmaking an exciting way to be creatively successful with a variety of techniques and materials.

ARTS-2316-201 Painting I, Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-3:30PM. Instructor: Alma Haertlein. An introduction to basic oil painting skills. Emphasis of this course is on rendering and basic techniques including wet-into-wet painting, underpainting, and glazing. First semester will cover basic shapes, still life, composition, value, portraits, safety, and materials.

ARTS-3324-262 Intermediate Ceramics, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-09:00PM. Instructor Alan Holmgreen. A continuation of Beginning Ceramics. This class covers further aspects of construction, wheel-throwing, basic glaze making, and an introduction to kiln firing and loading.

Late registration, with fees applied, will occur Jan. 16 - Jan. 20. Course changes continue through Jan. 27 with instructor's permission.

The University will be closed and classes suspended on Monday, Jan. 16 in a State-authorized observance of Martin Luther King Day. Offices reopen and classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
