Their final report will now advance to compete against other regional winners at the national competition in May.  The category focuses on developing those individual skills needed to succeed in a dynamic, competitive economy.

Groups competing in Dallas came from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Kansas. Over 50 college and university teams participated. The event is one of 17 SIFE USA Regional Competitions held across the country in March and April.

Faculty sponsor Dr. Michael Patrick, who accompanied the team to the Dallas competition, said the TAMIU SIFE group continues to impress and impact many with their targeted programs.

"We remain every bit as proud of our TAMIU SIFE group as with last year's winning team.  More importantly, the projects these students have created and implemented have made a difference in the lives of Laredoans from all walks of life," Dr. Patrick observed.

Gerardo Guerra, TAMIU-SIFE president, said the group enjoyed the competition and looks forward to future opportunities to represent TAMIU and Laredo in SIFE competitions.

"We have good projects that we undertook this year and we were very excited to present them at the Dallas Regional Competition. We look forward to our national competition efforts to come and to next year's Regional Competition," Guerra said.

TAMIU-SIFE's  projects, all targeted at creating community economic opportunities, were judged based on creativity, innovation and effectiveness.

Last year, TAMIU-SIFE students earned the national  "Rookie of the Year" Award at the SIFE USA National Exposition. They had previously won the Regional Champion honors at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in Dallas.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on university campuses in more than 40 countries.  Founded in 1975, it has grown to become one of the largest University-based organizations in the world. In the US alone, more than 800 colleges and universities, including TAMIU, are enrolled.

SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success and business ethics.
