The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved the addition of a new degree to Texas A&M International University’s graduate inventory.

Beginning Sept. 1, 2006, TAMIU will be able to offer a Master of Science degree with a major in Mathematics.

Dr. Dan Jones, TAMIU provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the degree addition increases opportunities for students and responds to the University’s service communities’ needs.

“Our initiative to develop this degree came as a response to our service communities that indicated a need for advanced education in mathematics.  We are honored to provide our students with opportunities that will help to further their professional growth,” Dr. Jones said.

He noted that while career options are quite broad in mathematics, including research and assessment, he hopes that many graduates will dedicate themselves to addressing the national math and science teacher shortage.

“There’s a critical need in these areas. I’m encouraged that many of our MS Mathematics students will indeed serve in these areas,” he said.

The degree addition brings TAMIU’s available inventory of undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees to 79.

The MS Mathematics  will be coordinated by the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences in the University’s  College of Arts and Sciences.

For additional information, contact the Department at 326.2440, visit offices in the Dr. F. M. Canseco Hall 301 or click on tamiu.edu
