Imagine cutting the Earth in half at the equator and walking along the diameter, from one side to the other.

Texas A&M International University employees walked a total of 7,934.5 miles as part of their participation in the six-week Walk Across Texas program. The University’s physical plant team racked up the most mileage of 15 teams with 682.32 miles.

“Walk Across Texas is hosted by TAMIU Student Health Services and our goal during the six-week period was 500 miles. We had a total of 90 people participate in teams of six between Jan. 30 and March 12,” explained Melissa Compean, SHS office coordinator.

Team Physical Plant included five employees and one student worker, Roman Skopal, who also averaged the most miles walked for his team. He averaged 40 miles a week. Mileage between TAMIU and Encinal is approximately 37 miles.

Team captain, Kimberlee Sandoval, TAMIU safety/risk manager, held the second highest average at 21.1 miles per week. Other members of team include: Andy Barrientos, service worker; Antonio De La Rosa, HV/AC operations specialist; Michelle Garcia, Physical Plant assistant and Richard Gentry, director, Physical Plant.

The team received medals and certificates for their accomplishment from TAMIU president Ray Keck. (photo)
