Beginning this Fall, Texas A&M International University's Athletics Director, Dr. Steve Garippa, will join the University's College of Education faculty.

TAMIU president Dr. Ray Keck announced the move and praised Dr. Garippa's leadership and commitment to higher education.

"The success of our program and its phenomenal growth is a direct result of his leadership, knowledge, and passionate commitment to education in its broadest reaches.

"Three years ago Coach Garippa completed his doctorate in education at our sister school, Texas A&M University-Commerce. At that time, he expressed to me his intention, at some point in the future, to begin a transition from his role as Director of Athletics to teaching.  That time has now come. We are delighted that his transition occurs here,"  Dr. Keck said.

Keck said that Coach Rafael Romo will serve as interim director of Athletics.

"Coach Romo, a man of talent, integrity, and wise judgment, has kindly agreed to serve as Interim Director of Athletics.  As soon as a committee can be formed, we will begin a national search for a new Athletics Director," Keck added.

Keck also noted that with the University's move to NCAA membership, TAMIU Athletics will move to the office of the Vice President of Administration and Finance.

"Mr. García and his team will oversee the fiscal demands of our new responsibilities as NCAA members and ensure the best environment for orderly and sustained growth," he said.

Dr. Keck saluted Garippa's efforts and the University's entire athletics program.

"I thank Dr. Garippa for his service to this University, to our students, and to this community, and salute Coach Romo as he heads a transition. Our athletes have been bright shining stars since the first moment they became a part of our University life. Our coaches have provided exemplary guidance, mentoring, and care for their well-being, and I thank them all," he said.
