A Week of Welcomes for TAMIU Students Aug. 23-31

Students this Fall at Texas A&M International University will hear at least a week's worth of “welcomes” Monday, Aug. 28-Thursday Aug. 31 as the University presents TAMIU Welcome Week.

“Welcome Week” is designated as the official welcome period for enrolled TAMIU students to get the Fall Semester underway at TAMIU. Events for the week include recreational activities, a roving magician, planetarium shows, and the Kinesiology Expansion Groundbreaking.

One of the week‘s highlights includes a performance by NBC's “Last Comic Standing” winner and member of the  U.S. Paralympic Soccer Team, Josh Blue. His self-deprecating humor often revolves around living with cerebral palsy and how he deals with it and defies stereotypes.

He encourages people to overcome their preconceived notions about disabled people with his jokes. A quick-witted comic, Blue began to perform stand-up while pursing a BA degree in creative writing from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. This event is open to TAMIU students only.

The TAMIU Welcome Week schedule is as follows:

Monday, Aug. 28: Information tent with water and popcorn at the University Green from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; personalized souvenir postcards and key chains give-away also on the Green from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.; roving Zoot Suit balloon artist and magician on the Green from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 29: Information tent with water and popcorn at the University Green from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; TAMIU's men's soccer team first NCAA game versus Incarnate Word in the soccer field; Josh Blue performance (open only to TAMIU students; ID required).

Wednesday, Aug. 30: Information tent with water and popcorn at the University Green from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.; Kinesiology Expansion Groundbreaking at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Memorial Garden at noon; Campus Recreation Day featuring Wild Rapid Water Ride, human gyroscope, Frisbee disc golf, obstacle course races, rock climbing wall, and fun snacks also in the LBV Memorial Garden AREA from 12:45 - 3:15 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 31: Flavors of Laredo in the Student Center Ballroom from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; free Planetarium shows for TAMIU students only (ID required).
