Creating databases will be a lot easier with a non-credit certificate course offered by Texas A&M International University’s College of Business Administration. “Using Microsoft Access to Create Databases” is designed for business professionals with no database background.

The course provides approximately 10 contact hours and meets Friday, Sept. 29, 7 – 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 30, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.m. in Anthony J. and Georgia A. Pellegrino Hall, room 219. Registration deadline is Sept. 27.

Course fee is $199.

This course is designed for managers, professionals, and entrepreneurs interested in using Access for the day-to-day business tasks. Students interested in the business area are also encouraged to take the course because it can help them understand basic database design and use. Participants are expected to have basic knowledge in computers, but not necessarily knowledge in database design or programming.

Students will have the opportunity to create databases from scratch, including database design, an introduction to SQL (a query language to extract data) and form and report creations. Hands-on examples will be provided in the course to expose the student to real-life situations and solutions using Access.

Main topics covered include: introduction to database design, databases and Access, relational databases and design essentials, creating databases with Access, enforcing database rules using Access, asking questions with SQL, creating forms with Access, and programming essentials with Access.

The class will be taught by Jesus Carmona, a doctoral student in the Management Information Systems concentration of the Ph.D. Program in International Business Administration at TAMIU. He is also an adjunct professor in the University’s department of MIS and Decision Science.
