Ballet Folklorico Classes Start Saturday at TAMIU

Keep your kids active with Mexican ballet folklórico dance classes taught by the Texas A&M International University Ballet Folklórico. Classes will meet Saturdays from Sept. 9 through Nov. 18.

"Mexican folklórico dance lessons are being offered to enable the participant to better understand the beauty and richness of Mexican culture. Dance classes will focus on footwork, skirt and hand movement and the history of the dances. Dance lessons are offered for children ages four years and up," explained Gabriela Mendoza-García, adjunct faculty and director of the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico.

Classes will meet at TAMIU's Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, room 123. Times vary according to age. Children 11 years and older will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; seven to 10-year-old children are scheduled from 11:30 am. to 12:30 p.m.; four to six-year-old children are scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

All students must wear shoes with a heel. Girls may wear casual clothing, but black leotards and white tights are preferred and a solid-colored Mexican ballet folklórico practice skirts is also required. A skirt pattern is available upon request. Boys may wear casual clothing. Purchase of costume is required for public performances for boys and girls.
