Registration Underway for Sports Management Seminar at TAMIU in October

Working in the sports industry doesn’t mean you have to be a top athlete. If you’re interested in the sports industry, sign up for the non-credit certificate course, “Sports Management Seminar” offered at Texas A&M International University by the College of Business Administration. The course is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28.

This course will provide approximately 10 contact hours, split over two days. Class will meet Friday from 7 – 9 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.m.

Registration deadline is Oct. 25. Tuition is $199.

This non-credit course will describe some of the keys to the sports industry, growth trends and careers available including an overview of management in professional sports franchises, intercollegiate athletics, sports marketing and promotions, athletic representation, sport law, facility management, health clubs, spas, resort industries, and sports tourism.

Managers, professionals and coaches interested in methodology and techniques for greater success in sports management are encouraged to take the class. Business students and individuals who plan on taking supervisory and marketing responsibilities in sports management are also encouraged to take the class.

Topics covered include: history, management, marketing, financial, legal and ethical principals.

Dr. Steven Garippa, visiting assistant professor with the College of Education, will teach the course. Dr. Garippa was TAMIU’s first Athletics director when the program started in August 2001. He was responsible for all aspects of the implementation of the athletics department at TAMIU. He also served as director of athletics and physical education at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas, and achieved a long list of accomplishments at SAGU.

Among those were developing and implementing a recruitment and retention program that helped SAGU grow from an enrollment of 761 to 1,762. He was also instrumental in all phases of the growth and development of an athletics program that grew from two to 11 sports.
