A.R. Sanchez Series Continues Oct. 10

Novelist, essayist, physicist and professor Dr. Alan Lightman will be at Texas A&M International University as the second speaker for the 2006-2007 A.R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Lightman has taught physics and astronomy at Harvard University for more than 20 years and is adjunct professor in the Writing and Humanistic Studies Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 1982, Lightman began publishing essays about science, the human side of science and the "mind of science," beginning with Smithsonian Magazine and moving to Science 82, The New Yorker, and other magazines. Since then, his essays, short fiction and reviews have appeared in numerous magazines and catalogs.

Lightman's books have been translated into 30 languages and his work includes The Discoveries: Great Breakthroughs in 20th-Century Science, Including the Original Papers, Einstein's Dreams and The Diagnosis.

He received his B.A. in physics from Princeton University in 1970, Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude, and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1974.

Funded by the A.R. Sánchez Foundation, the four lectures in the series are free and open to the public and take place on their respective evenings at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Monday, April 30 - Dr. Susan Hunter with “AIDS in Africa”
