Registration is currently underway for the Texas A&M International University Regional Science Olympiad scheduled for March 3, 2007 at Texas A&M University. Students in grades 6 – 12 are encouraged to sign up online by Tuesday, Jan. 2.

The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events that students prepare for during the year.

The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games. The challenging events are balanced among the various science and engineering disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications.

The TAMIU Regional Science Olympiad will accept a maximum of 10 teams per division.

Groups must compete at the regional level to qualify to the 2007 Texas Science Olympiad on April 27–28.

Registration fee per team is $180. This will pay the State and National affiliation fees and provide each team with the coach's manual and entry of one 15-member team into one regional competition. Qualifying teams advance to State, with the State winners advancing to Nationals.

Science Olympiad is a non-profit organization developed to improve the quality of science education, increase student interest in science, and provide recognition of outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.

All of this is done through interscholastic competitions where students in grades K-12 (Texas State only offers programs for grades 6-12) can participate at invitational, local, regional, state, and national level competitions against teams from all 50 states.

For more information about the regional competition, please contact TAMIU assistant professor Dr. Kenneth J. Tobin at 326.2417, e-mail ktobin@tamiu.edu or visit http://cees.tamiu.edu/olympiad/index.html
