‘Guitarras de Navidad’ Wednesday at TAMIU

Texas A&M International University’s College of Arts and Sciences, department of Fine and Performing Arts will present the fifth Annual "Guitarras de Navidad," Christmas Guitar Concert, Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 8:00 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA) Recital Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

The holiday program will feature the TAMIU Classical Guitar Ensemble, directed by Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, associate professor of Music Education.

Scheduled selections include Song Without Words by Mendelssohn, Noel by R.G. Mayeur, O Santissima and O Holy Night, Theme and Variations in E minor, written for the guitar ensemble by Sylvia E. Hazlerig and “Hallelujah” from the Messiah by Handel, among others.

The Ensemble will be joined by students of the TAMIU Early High School College Program and Soto Academy of Music in an audience sing-along of popular seasonal classics such as “Silent Night,” “Away in a Manger,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and “Joy to the World.”

The Ensemble is comprised of University students who share experience in reading and performing guitar literature for small instrumental ensembles. It performs at various community and civic functions during the school year.

 Among repertoire studied and performed by the Ensemble are classical, flamenco, new age, and contemporary music, in addition to selected works for the lute and guitar family, including original compositions by student composer-arrangers.
