Next week will be full of music and swing! Don’t miss the opportunity to see the University Jazz “Big Band” and the University Jazz Improvisation Band.

On Monday, Nov. 13 the University Jazz “Big Band” will perform at 7:30 in the Sam N. Johnson III Experimental Theatre.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14 the University Jazz Improvisation Band will perform at 7:30 in the Sam N. Johnson III Experimental Theatre. The performances are free and open to the public.

Both jazz ensembles are under the direction of TAMIU adjunct faculty member Adbeel “Tito” Charneco.

Charneco said the goal of the Jazz band each semester is to focus on different themes. This semester, the “Big Band” theme focuses on the classic, swing-style music era of Glenn Miller.

“Through this educational band, we want to bring attention to the heritage and beginning of jazz music, where it starts, how it was developed and built on,” he said.

Students will use unique tools to create different sound effects with their instruments, offering interesting contrasts.

Charneco noted that this type of jazz improvisation acquaints the students with the form and art of improvisation, so that when they play with the band they have already worked on those skills. He said the audiences will enjoy the performances.

“They should come ready to have a good time, find their seats and buckle up their seat belts,” said Charneco.

Charneco has a degree in jazz studies and saxophone performance from the University of North Texas.
