Texas A&M International University faculty member Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, associate professor of music education, has written a feature and lesson plan on Mexico’s Christmas tradition of Las Posadas for the December 2006 issue of John Jacobson’s Music Express magazine.

“Mexico celebrates Las Posadas,” provides the history of the tradition of Las Posadas. The eight-day celebration begins on Dec. 16 and continues through Christmas Eve.  The eight nights signify the time when Mary and Joseph were in search for shelter on Christmas Eve.

“The Las Posadas celebration has become a wonderful community affair for neighbors and relatives that enjoy wonderful evenings of fiesta with music and delicious foods,” explained Dr. Soto.

Soto is the author of ¡Fiesta De Canciones! and co-author of Multilevel Strategies for English Language Learners and Spotlight on Music. He teaches classes for music and children and leads the Department of Fine and Performing Arts guitar program and Classical Guitar Ensemble.

He received his B.Ed. from the Universidad Autonoma de Noreste in Mexico, a B.A. from Abilene Christian University and his M.M and Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi.
