One of Texas A&M International University's most popular graduate programs, the Master of Public Administration, will add an additional track in Health Administration this Spring.

Dr. William Riggs, assistant professor and interim chair of the College of Arts and Sciences' department of Social Sciences, said the new track would be of great interest to those interested in careers in the public health sector.

“This is one of the fastest growing job markets in the United States and the demand for personnel to manage the varying aspects of health care has also increased. Here in Laredo we have four healthcare facilities and various health service agencies and all are constantly growing,” Dr. Riggs noted.

Dr. Peter Haruna, TAMIU associate professor, concurred, and noted that the new MPA track will provide relevant learning by experienced, field-savvy instructors.

“Our experienced educators will be leading courses that will focus on procedural and substantive issues such as the legal properties of healthcare, methodology, budgeting and finance and implementation of healthcare policy," Dr. Haruna said.

Classes are being offered starting Spring 2007 and will include “Survey of Public Health Administration,” and “Health Economics and Policy Implementation.”

Those interested in the new MPA-Health Administration track will need to hold a Bachelor's degree in any field and be accepted into the TAMIU Graduate Program.  Scholarship assistance is available. Spring 2007 classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 16.
