Notre Dame Expert Leads Latino Art Lecture Tonight at TAMIU

Explore the history of Chicano/Latino art movements, from Mexican influences of José Gudalupe Posada, the muralists and Jean Charlot, through the 1960s and more at a special lecture at Texas A&M International University’s Student Center Theater, Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas, assistant provost, Júlian Samora Chair in Latino Studies, director of the Institute for Latino Studies (ILS) at the University of Notre Dame, and sociology professor, will present the lecture featuring artwork from his extensive personal art collection and pieces commissioned by the ILS.

As a photographer, Dr. Cárdenas has had his work published in journals, textbooks and brochures. He also established and owned Galería sin Fronteras, Inc. in Austin, Texas, and accumulated the largest collection of Chicano/Latino art in the country.

Cárdenas has been named as one of the 100 most influential Latinos in the US three times by Hispanic Business Magazine. He has authored or edited numerous books, articles, monographs, and reports on topics covering several fields of specialization, including international migration, economy and society, and race and ethnic relations.

He received his BA from the California State University at Los Angeles and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the University of Notre Dame Alumni Association as part of the Hesburgh Lecture Series.
