There is still time to apply for one of 26 undergraduate or six graduate annual scholarships available for students interested in majoring in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematical Sciences (CSEMS) at Texas A&M International University.

Deadline to apply is June 8, 2007.

High school graduating seniors, community college students and transfer students applying to TAMIU and current TAMIU students are encouraged to pick up an application in the University’s Office of Financial Aid.

The funds for the scholarships are from a $500,000 grant TAMIU received from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for its “Mathematics and Engineering Best” (ME-Best) Program.

The ME-Best awards will offer undergraduates up to $3,125 per year and up to $6,250 per year to graduate students. Scholarship funds will be used to cover tuition and fees for full-time students.

Qualified scholarship applicants must meet requirements and be enrolled full-time in a specific TAMIU degree program and demonstrate financial need. Priority will be given to students from low-income families who are ethnic minorities, women or persons with disabilities who are under-represented in these fields, especially minority populations.

The program’s objectives focus on the timely completion of degree requirements, increasing internship/research opportunities, improving the quality of professional development, expanding career explorations and developing job placement.

Long-term benefits are dedicated to encouraging students from the targeted populations and their study in CSEMS fields, mentoring and cooperative learning experiences, expanded knowledge of the research process, establishment of internships and employment opportunities and development of networking in the University and local communities.

For more information, please contact program principal investigator, Dr. Eduardo E. Chappa-Leiva, TAMIU assistant professor of mathematics, at 326.2598 or echappa@tamiu.edu

University office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
