The contributions Blacks have made to jazz will be discussed in a rare and thoroughly researched presentation by Joe Guerra, an accomplished jazz musician from Laredo Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s Sam Johnson Experimental Theater.

Guerra’s presentation will cap off TAMIU’s celebration of Black History Month, which has included student events on campus throughout the month of February. Admission to the event is free and the community is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.

Through a lecture, demonstrations and a brief performance, Guerra and his Joe Guerra Jazz Trio will discuss the history of jazz and its African American influence ranging from Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong to Duke Ellington and contemporary musicians such as Wynton Marsalis.

“Jazz is what I have dedicated my whole life to and I am honored to be a part of Black History Month celebrations at TAMIU,” said Guerra, who performs regularly throughout Texas. He released his CD, “Jazz Desde Laredo” in May 2001.

The presentation will take place at the Sam Johnson Experimental Theater, located on the east side of TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The theater provides an intimate setting for recitals and theater performances.

This year’s Black History Month presentations for TAMIU students have included Chinua Hawk, singer/songwriter, the Davis and Dow Great Jazz Divas show, Tre Luv the comedian,  poet Komplex and informative  signs and poster displays on campus featuring historical African Americans, coordinated by the Office of Student Affairs.
