Latino Literary Greats
Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Special Collections and Archives
The TAMIU and local community is invited to the Sue & Radcliffe Killam Library Special Collections & Archives for a special exhibit on Latino literary figures during the exhibition of Our Journeys/Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement.
The exhibit, part of the many events that celebrate Latinos, will focus on Hispanic authors (peninsular & from the Americas) and includes items from the King Spanish Literature Collection, the Farmer Native American & Hispanic Authors Collection, and the Killam Library Special Collections Rare Book Collection. Also, don't miss the Guerrero Viejo photographs that illustrate an example of the geographical landscape that may have influenced some of our Hispanic authors in the Americas.
Distinguished speaker Nicolas Kanellos, the curatorial consultant to the exhibit, will address the Friends of the Library on Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage in the Killam Library Great Room. (time TBA)
The newly remodeled Special Collection and Archives will be unveiled in a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a tour of the exhibit. A reception in the Student Center will follow the tour. (time TBA)

Our Journeys/Our Stories School Tours
Elementary, middle and high school students will be on campus for a look at Our Journeys/Our Stories in the Student Center, the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Special Collections and Archives exhibit on Latino literary figures, and the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts for a lesson on how to document their lives using 35mm SLR cameras. The lessons will be taught by Photography II students.

Writing with Light/Escribiendo con la Luz
Various locations, including Student Center
TAMIU photography students will take pictures that address “Latino Community” and First Year Writing Program students will write responses to the pictures. Both will be on display near the main exhibit of Our Journey/Our Stories.
Photography students will also hold photography workshops for elementary school students so they can take their own portraits.
Students and teachers of the South Texas Writing Project will teach the elementary students how to write their own profiles and those of family members.

Celebrating and Teaching Our Heritage — Our Journeys/Our Stories
Western Hemispheric Trade Center
Teachers are invited to the Texas A&M International University College of Education Bilingual/Biliterate/Bicultural Fifth Annual Conference.
Make plans to attend the free pre-Conference training by Our Journeys/Our Stories project director Evelyn Figueroa that will focus on how to use the exhibition of Our Journeys/Our Stories as a resource to enhance classroom curriculum. Teachers will receive a Our Journeys/Our Stories education packet that includes a CD-ROM, an educator guide and a poster mini-exhibit free of charge.

Voices in the Monte Writers Series Lecture and Workshop
Student Center Rotunda
Texas A&M International University’s Writing Center will hold its Voices in the Monte Writers Series lecture and writing workshop for area community members, high school writing students and faculty at Texas A&M International University. The Series features Latino honoree Christina García from Our Journeys/Our Stories.
García will discuss the role of Latinos in a writer's and publisher's world and share her experiences with young Latino writers to encourage them to write more.
This event is free and open to the public.
High school and TAMIU students are invited to hear García’s “Talk About Craft” on April 7.

May 5
La Vida Latina Celebrating Our Journeys
Student Center
The Division of International Programs will host an extension of the Smithsonian Exhibit, Our Journeys/Our Stories, in a series of Latin American country exhibits—posters, study abroad information tables and educational games—presented in various forms by presenters that have cultural ties to the countries they represent.
High school students will “travel” through different parts of Latin America via information booths, game and activity set-ups. Students will receive a “passport” that will be stamped at each country presentation, study abroad table, or for every game participated. Those who collect all available stamps will be eligible for a prize drawing.
