Fernández credits her interest in science and her love of taking things apart to a defining moment in her life when her parents gave her a microscope for her sixth birthday. She recalls looking at common, boring substances through that microscope and finding that there was more to each substance. “Each substance had its own 'Singular little worlds existing everywhere,'” she reveals in her artist's statement.

Over the past three years, Fernández has been creating her art through a keyboard, a mouse, a stylus and monitor. She still finds similarity in the digital process to her previous approaches to painting and drawing.
