Free Speech Explored at Sanchez Lecture March 7

The 2007 A.R. Sánchez Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series presented by Texas A&M International University’s College of Arts and Sciences will resume Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall with Dr. Geoffrey Stone’s lecture,“ Free Speech in the Time of War.” 

This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Dr. Stone, Harry Kalven Jr. Distinguished Services Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School, has been a member of the University of Chicago since 1973 and has served as dean of the University of Chicago Law School and as provost of the University of Chicago.

Stone is currently editing “Inalienable Rights,” a series of volumes for the Oxford University Press and working on several new book projects, including “Sexing the Constitution.”

He has been an editor for the Supreme Court Review since 1991 and is the author or co-author of many articles and books on Constitutional Law, including “Perilous Times: Free Speech in Wartime from the Sedation Act of 1798 to the War on Terrorism,” “Constitutional Law,” “The First Amendment,” and “Eternally Vigilant: Free Speech in the Modern Era.”

“Perilous Times” received the Los Angles Times Book Prize of History, the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award and the American Civil Liberties Harry Kalven Award for Free Expression and was listed as one of the most notable books of 2004 by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angles Times, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Stone received his B.S. from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce of the University of Pennsylvania and also received his J.D. from the University of Chicago.

The Lecture Series is funded by the A.R. Sánchez Foundation.

The remaining lecture in the Series is scheduled for Monday, April 30, 2007 when Dr. Susan Hunter presents her lecture on “AIDS in Africa.”
