A special announcement of a dynamic gift to the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra will highlight the 4 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2007 performance at Texas A&M International University's Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Recital Hall.

“We will share our good news with our audience so that they can celebrate with us,” explained LPO Music Director Brendan Townsend.

The afternoon concert will feature guest soloists Luis Casal and Dr. Yu-Mei Huang who will perform Wolfgang Mozart's  “Sinfonia Concertante.” Mozart composed this “double concerto” in Salzburg in the summer of 1779, and very likely was the soloist in its first performance.

Casal, a Panama native, is one of Panama’s leading violinists and violists, and serves as principal violist of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, violist of the Laredo International String Quartet, violin/viola instructor at the Laredo Community College, and faculty member at the Festival of Panama Alfredo de Saint-Malo.

Dr. Huang, originally from Taipei, Taiwan, is assistant professor of upper strings at Texas A&M International University. She holds her DMA from the University of Miami and is concertmaster of the LPO. She has previously been concertmaster and associate conductor for the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra, and instructor for its “Strings for Kids” program.

In addition to the soloists' performances, eagerly anticipated is the joining of approximately 120 male and female voices from both sides of the border for a performance of Lowell Liebermann's fame “Symphony No. 2,” Townsend said.

“Joining the LPO for the historic performance will be the Laredo Philharmonic Chorale, TAMIU Chorale, Laredo Community College Choir, United High School Choir, choristers from the Vidal M. Treviño School for the Fine Arts and Communications, and the Coro Espíritu Santo from Nuevo Laredo, Tamps. It's going to be a remarkable moment,” he said.
