Implications of Global Banking March 21 at TAMIU

Global banking and its implications on the Western Hemisphere will be the subject of the next installment of the 2007 International Bank of Commerce (IBC), Keynote Speaker Series with Dr. Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC) room 111.

This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Dr. Hinojosa-Ojeda is an associate professor at the University of California-Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies and the César E. Chávez Center for Interdisciplinary Instruction. He was born in México and raised in Chicago and received a B.A. (Economics), M.A. (Anthropology) and Ph.D (Political Science) at the University of Chicago.

Hinojosa-Ojeda is the author of numerous articles and books on the political economy of regional integrations in various parts of the world, including trade, investment and migration relations between the U.S. Mexico, Latin American and the Pacific Rim. He is co-author of “Latinos in a Changing U.S. Economy: Comparative Perspectives on the U.S. Labor Market Since 1939” (New York: IUP/CUNY, 1991) and co-editor of  “Labor Market Interdependence between the United States and Mexico” (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1992).

Hinojosa-Ojeda recently completed a book on the political economy of U.S.-Latin American relations in the late 20th century including the impact of a potential Free Trade of the Americans Agreement (“Convergence and Divergence between NAFTA, Chile, and Mercosur: Overcoming Dilemmas of North and South American Culture with Economic Integration”).

In collaboration with Representative Esteban Torres of California, Hinojosa-Ojeda is the originator of the proposal for the growth of the North American Development Bank, which was created by the U.S. and Mexican governments in 1994. He is a board member of the Los Angeles Community Development Bank and was appointed to the Economic Strategies Panel of the State of California.

The IBC Keynote Speaker Series brings to the University individuals of exceptional accomplishments and expertise to enhance the academic experience of TAMIU students, faculty and the community.

The next speaker in the series, Dr. William C. Gruben, will present “México’s Maquiladora Industry and US-México Integration,” on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m.at WHTC room 111.
