Flores, a co-founding director of the South Texas Writing Project, is an award-winning short story writer and novelist. It is currently a finalist in contests sponsored by the Texas Institute of Letters and ForeWord magazine.

His manuscript “Friend of a Minor Poet” was a finalist in the Mid-List First Series Award for the Novel in 2002. Flores’ “Sex As a Political Condition,” a satire of the cultural wars on the Mexican-American border, won third place in the Chicano/Latino Literary Contest in 2003.
