5,377 miles really is too far to travel to see a French film.  But this May, France is moving a  little closer to Laredo!

Texas A&M International University will present its first “La Vie En France French Film Series.” The French Film Series will be screened at TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall weekly throughout May.

The films are free of charge and open to the public.

Films will screen at 7 p.m. for most showings with a discussion panel featuring TAMIU and United Independent School District faculty to follow.

The schedules and films showing are as follows.

L’auberge espagnole, Friday, May 4 at 7 p.m. - The film is about a young French student who participates in a summer program in Spain with six other students. The film explores the difficulty of moving into new surroundings and highlights the multicultural environment that is Europe today.

“Qui a Tue Bambi?, Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. - The film is about a student nurse, Isabelle who works in a Paris hospital and meets a doctor with a terrible secret. This strange and chilling film explores the line separating help from harm.

Le Papillon, Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. - Le Papillon is about an eight-old girl Elsa and her mother who move in next door to an elderly entomologist, Julien who keeps butterflies in his flat.  Elsa and Julien become very attached, until Elsa accidentally leaves the door to his flat open.

8 Femmes, Wednesday, May 23 at 9 a.m. - 8 Femmes is a combination of a musical comedy mixed with a murder mystery, all set in the 50s.  It features three generations of talented and famous actresses in France.  Characters break into popular French songs, creating an ironic disconnect.

L’Appartement, Wednesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. - This film is by Luis Gerardo Otero, based on a short story by TAMIU’s professor of Spanish, Dr. José Cardona-López.  This film is about Benôit and Natalia, a couple who fell in love while each searches for an apartment in Paris.

Le chignon d’Olga, Wednesday, May 30 at 9 p.m. -The film tells the story of a young man named Julien who loses his mother but then finds love.  He and his entire family experience the pain of the losing of their mother, but initially can’t talk about it.

The TAMIU French Film Festival was made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This film series is a part of the Tournées Festival. The program is made possible with the generous support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Centre National de la Cinématographie, the Grand Marnier Foundation, the Florence Gould Foundation and the Franco-American Cultural Fund (SACEM, the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and the Motion Picture Association).
