Latin American Studies Week Coming to TAMIU

A week-long observation of Latin American Studies at Texas A&M International University will take place April 23-27 with a variety of events designed to heighten awareness of the field.

The observance is hosted by the Latin American Studies Program, sponsored by the University’s Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language DOE Title VI Grant with additional assistance from the Ford Motor Company Fund. All events are free of charge and unless otherwise noted, are open to the public.

From fun games of lotería and lectures on the clash of languages to readings and dance performances and special exhibits on Latin American countries’ cultures, Latin American Studies Week will offer an eye-opening experience for students and TAMIU visitors.

Events for the week include:

Tuesday, April 24

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Lotería games held in Student Center dining area

2:30-3:30 p.m.
Department of Language and Literature Digital Language Lab Open House in Pellegrino Hall 201

7:30 a.m.-9 p.m.
Inauguration of the Latin American Studies Lecture Series featuring Dr. Patricia MacGregor-Mendoza, New Mexico State University associate professor of Spanish and Linguistics, in Bob Bullock Hall 101. Dr. MacGregor-Mendoza’s lecture topic is “The Clash between Spanish and School: Stories of Surrender, Survival and Success.”

Wednesday, April 25

9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.
“La Vida Latina: Celebrating Our Journeys” Student Center Rotunda featuring Latin countries and their culture and hosted by the Division of International Programs with assistance by the Ford Motor Company Fund as part of the “Our Journeys, Our Stories” Exhibition underway through May 12.

10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Pan flute music performances by Acmed Tuesta, artist and songwriter from Foco, Inc. of San Antonio in the Student Center dining area.

12 p.m.
City of Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas will sign a Proclamation of Latin American Studies Week in the Student Center dining area.

4:30-5:30 p.m.
Dr. MacGregor-Mendoza to visit Dr. Jeffrey’s Latin American Cultures class (by invitation only).

Thursday, April 26

11:15 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
!Viva Latinoamérica!, a presentation of the arts featuring readings from favorite authors, music from favorite artists and a folkloric dance from Colima, México in the Student Center dining area. Open to the public.
