Music aficionados won’t want to miss the next performance in the Texas A&M International University Sharkey-Corrigan Organ Recital Series Tuesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

The guest musician for the evening, Maestro Hector Guzmán, is in demand internationally as a conductor and a recitalist.

The evening’s program includes: Christmas Sonata by Miguel Bernal-Jiménez; Prelude and Fugue in B Minor, BWV544 by Johann Sebastian Bach; “Finale” from Symphony No. 1, Op. 14 by Louis Vierne; and more.

In his native México, Guzmán took first prize in the “Chamber Soloist” competition and the “Manuel Ponce” national organ competition that helped him achieve his impressive reputation as an organist. He also won solo competitions at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the University of North Texas (UNT). In 1978, he became the first Latin American ever chosen as a finalist in France’s “Grand Prix de Chartres,” the world’s most prestigious international organ competition.

Guzmán has received many awards including: the “Outstanding National Young Artist” from the government of México, the “Golden Lyre” by the Mexican Union of Musicians, the “Meadows” from SMU and the DeVry Institute’s “Director Par Excellence.” He was also included in the Outstanding Musicians of the XX Centurymagazine, published by the International Centre in Cambridge, England.

Guzmán is currently the music director of the Plano Symphony Orchestra, the Irving Symphony Orchestra and the San Angelo Symphony. He holds degrees from the Conservatory in México City, UNT and SMU.

The Sharkey-Corrigan Organ was a gift of the E. H. Corrigan Foundation, lead by longtime Laredo businessman E. H. Corrigan, passionate supporter of the arts. Corrigan has said his gift is a statement of an affection for his hometown and intended to provide this area with one of the finest pipe organs, making real its musical riches for generations to come.
