‘Solitude’ International Reading at TAMIU Tonight

Just as characters revisit the fictional town of Macondo, members of the Texas A&M International University's Club de Español Siglo XXI (21st Century Spanish Club) invite the public to revisit, or visit for the first time, Gabriel García Márquez' Nobel Prize winner “One Hundred Years of Solitude” Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. in the Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 116.

This event, “One Hundred Years of Solitude: Forty Years Later Facing the Reader” (Cien años de soledad: Cuarenta años despues frente al lector), is free and open to the public.

“With this event, the Spanish Club Siglo XXI, will join the world celebration of the first 40 years of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude.’ In many countries, in many different languages, people are organizing public readings of this work,” explained Dr. José Cardona-López, Club faculty advisor and associate professor of Spanish.

“In our celebration at TAMIU, we will have the opportunity to listen to the music that is present in that novel as well,” added Dr. Cardona-López.

“The Club de Español Siglo XXI (21st Century Spanish Club) in cooperation with some faculty members will perform a reading of excerpts from ‘Cien años de soledad’ to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the publication of the famous novel. Students and faculty will read from the Spanish original, and to highlight the novel's international appeal, from translations into English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese and Persian,” added Lola O. Norris, Club member and International Language Institute director.

Norris will read an excerpt in Italian, with the original Spanish text projected on the screen during all the readings.

“Others will read in Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese and Persian. This highlights both the amazing success of the novel all over the world and the international character of our University,” said Norris.
