Learn Chinese, Japanese, Spanish at TAMIU This Summer

Take the opportunity to learn a new language this summer at Texas A&M International University. Choose from Beginning Japanese, Beginning Mandarin or Beginning Spanish I or II.

The eight week program starts Monday, June 4 and ends Thursday, July 26.

Admission to TAMIU is not required.

Tuition is $388. Books are not included in the tuition.

“Classes are not for academic credit, but participants who successfully complete the courses will receive continuing education credits and certificates upon completion,” explained Lola O. Norris, International Language Institute director.

The curriculum emphasizes language instruction and cultural awareness. Classes are taught by native speakers.

All classes will meet from 6 – 8:15 p.m.

Students interested in becoming familiar with the Japanese culture should sign up for Beginning Japanese I. This introductory course to practical Japanese is designed for students with no prior experience. Emphasis will be placed on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will learn the Japanese sound system, everyday greetings, small talk and basic oral and written communication.

Beginning Japanese will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Anyone interested in China or Chinese culture should register for Beginning Mandarin I. This course offers an introduction to Chinese culture, history and language for students with very little or no prior experience. Students will engage in conversations, class discussions and multimedia usage. This class is interactive and requires participation.

Beginning Mandarin I will meet Mondays and Wednesdays.

South Texas residents not familiar with Spanish may want to sign up for Beginning Spanish I or II.

Beginning Spanish I is taught with the communicative approach designed for students who have minimal knowledge of the Spanish language. The primary purpose of this course is to ensure students are able to communicate in everyday situations. The goals of this class are for students to develop listening and speaking skills, learn daily life situation vocabulary, gain basic Spanish reading skills and use simple present tense. No prerequisite is required.

This class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Beginning Spanish II is a continuation of Beginning Spanish I. Students will continue to improve and expand their Spanish communications skills. Students will also continue to develop their reading and writing skills. Primary goals are listening and speaking, gain vocabulary development through thematic units, obtain an understanding and appreciation of Hispanic cultures through readings and use different verb tenses in oral and written form. Prerequisite: Spanish I or the consent of the instructor.
