Texas A&M International University’s Police Department will offer a women’s self-defense training course to the public from June through November.

Known as RAD (Rape Aggression Defense system), the course is a National Standard in Self-Defense Education and is a women-only 12-hour course that will be conducted on campus at TAMIU.

RAD begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance and then progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense training. The course is free of charge and open to women from age 13 and up.

Course instructor Jaime Rios, TAMIU Police sergeant, said the course is comprehensive and offers realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women.

“It’s not a martial arts program, but it is the country’s largest and fastest-growing self-defense program. There are over 4000 instructors trained and well over 160,000 women have participated.

“The course meets and exceeds all guidelines for choosing a self-defense program, is developed by the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCASA) and is the only self-defense program endorsed by the International Association of College Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA),” he said.

For the month of June, courses will be offered Monday-Thursday, June 25, 26, 27 and 28 from 6-9 p.m.

July course offerings are scheduled on Fridays from 9 a.m. – 12 noon on July 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Monday through Thursdays from 1- 4 p.m. on July 23, 24, 25 and 26.

Courses are also available in August, September, October and November.
